AO3 download not working?

Let’s find the missing page.

Start with the message you’re seeing.

01 / THE LINK

“This is not a story link”

Open the story itself and copy its address — for AO3, the one containing /works/ followed by a number. Collection, search, and bookmark links do not contain the story text.

02 / SITE ACCESS

“The site is refusing the request”

Some sites are busy or ask for a browser check. Wait before retrying, or download the story there (or with a tool like FicHub) and use “Upload a file”. Member-only works can’t be fetched.

03 / TRANSLATION

“Translation could not finish”

Check the translation service status below. Try the first chapter, or choose Original to download without translation. Paid translations that fail can be restarted from your library link.

If the file opens but looks wrong, try EPUB in a reading app, PDF for a fixed page, or TXT for plain text. For Kindle, send the EPUB through Send to Kindle.

The light between the shelves

by Parallel

CHAPTER 1

A light left on

The bookshop was the only place in the city that stayed open when it rained. Not because anyone came in, but because, as its owner liked to say, a good story should always leave a light on.

这家书店是城里唯一一家下雨时依然营业的地方。并不是因为有人会来,而是因为,正如店主常说的那样,一个好故事,总该留着一盏灯。

Elliot found it on a Thursday, with a broken umbrella and nowhere in particular to be. A small brass bell announced his arrival. Somewhere between the shelves, someone was making tea.

埃利奥特是在一个星期四发现它的。他撑着一把坏掉的伞,也没有什么特别想去的地方。一枚小小的铜铃宣告了他的到来。书架深处,有人正在泡茶。

“You look like you need a different ending,” said the voice behind the counter.

“你看起来需要一个不一样的结局。”柜台后传来一个声音。

“I would settle for a dry place to start,” he replied.

“有个干燥的地方重新开始,我就很知足了。”他答道。

A FEW MARGIN NOTES

A little clarity,
before you dive in.

Good reading starts with peace of mind.

Having trouble with a download?
How do I download an AO3 work or other fanfic?

Copy the link to a public story on AO3, FanFiction.Net, FictionPress, Wattpad, Royal Road, Scribble Hub, SpaceBattles, Sufficient Velocity or Questionable Questing, paste it above, and choose EPUB, PDF, or TXT. For anything else, upload an EPUB, HTML, or TXT file you already have. Original downloads are free.

Can I read the download on my Kindle or iPhone?

Yes. EPUB works with Apple Books, Kobo, and most reading apps. For Kindle, upload your EPUB using Amazon’s Send to Kindle service. PDF preserves the page layout, while TXT opens almost anywhere. No browser extension is needed.

How does bilingual translation work?

Parallel translates each paragraph with Alibaba Cloud’s Qwen-MT (Flash for speed, Plus for best quality) and keeps it aligned with the original: either directly below each paragraph, or side by side. Character names are detected first and translated once, so they stay consistent across the whole book. You can add your own name glossary too.

Why is my AO3 download not working?

Check that the link points to a story, rather than a collection, search, or bookmark page. Member-only, deleted, and unavailable works cannot be downloaded. If a site is busy or asks for a browser check, wait a few minutes, or download the story there and use “Upload a file”. Parallel cannot bypass login restrictions or platform blocks.

Is Parallel free to use? How much does translation cost?

Original downloads and first-chapter translations are free, with no account required. Translating a whole book is a one-time payment: from $1.99 (Fast) or $2.99 (Best) for a book of up to about 50,000 words. You always see the exact price before paying, and the finished book stays downloadable for 30 days in every format.

What happens to my story?

Story text is stored temporarily (3 days for free downloads, 30 days for paid translations) and then deleted. Text selected for translation is sent to Alibaba Cloud for Qwen-MT translation. Payments are processed by Creem; we never see card details. Downloads are for personal offline reading; no public library is created.

Made for readers. With love for the stories that stay with us.

Happy reading.
